Sterilization

E-beam Sterilization - ISO 11137 AAMI TIR 33, AAMI TIR 15843, AAMI TIR 17
Electron beam sterilization (e-beam) is used to sterilize a variety of disposable medical devices. The e-beam process can result in less material degradation than with gamma irradiation for some materials.

E-beams are electrons that are accelerated to very high speeds. These electrons penetrate the products and damage the DNA strands of microorganisms. Microorganisms are considered sterile once they are damaged and unable to produce.

Medical products are sterilized in their original shipping containers. E-beam can be more easily impacted by load density variability than gamma irradiation.

Validations for both gamma and e-beam radiation are carried out using the same AAMI/ISO/EN standards.
